When someone walks through the doors of Misfit Gym Windham, one of the first questions they ask is, “What exactly is CrossFit?”
I give them the textbook definition: constantly varied functional movements performed at high intensity. But what does that mean in the real world? First, I would encourage you to try a CrossFit workout to see what it feels like. You can do CrossFit at any fitness level. But why do we train this way?
CrossFit allows you to keep up with life’s demands. If you fall, you can get up. If your kids run ahead of you, you can chase them down. CrossFit lets you get that heavy box off the top shelf. CrossFit lets you explore Rome instead of watching what Rome would be like on YouTube.
What are we chasing? Fitness.
Fitness is capability.
Fitness is independence.
Fitness equals Freedom.
Fitness can certainly be measured by how much you can lift or how fast you can run a mile. But those numbers aren’t what really matter. What matters is what your body allows you to do. The fitter you become, the more capable you become—and the fewer times you’ll have to say “no.”
Want to spend your Saturday planting your garden instead of paying someone else to do it?
Want to be the grandparent who can chase their grandchildren instead of watching them from a lawn chair?
Want to travel without worrying about whether your body can keep up?
That’s what Freedom looks like.
What’s the opposite of Freedom? Dependence.
And one of the fastest roads to dependence is poor health.
We all know those relatives who can’t get up out of their chairs.
We all know that relative who relies on someone to bring them to the bathroom.
We all know that relative who watches from the window instead of participating.
If you ask me, there’s nothing sadder than watching someone you love slowly decline.
While not every illness can be prevented, many of the diseases that rob people of their independence are directly caused by years of poor nutrition and inactivity. The encouraging news is that we have far more control over our future than most people realize.
So what can you do to avoid this reality?
Fitness is your best defense against losing your independence.
Fitness is a hedge against sickness. The fitter you get and the longer you can hang on to that fitness, the longer your life will be and the fuller your years will be.
So how do you do it? You come to Misfit Gym Windham.
We can’t promise you’ll never get sick.
We can’t promise life won’t throw obstacles your way.
But we can help you become stronger, healthier, and more capable than you are today.
Because fitness isn’t really about running dozens of miles or lifting the heaviest weight in the room.
It’s about having the Freedom to live life on your terms.
To play with your kids.
To hike mountains.
To carry your groceries.
To travel.
To say “yes” to opportunities instead of wondering if your body can handle them.
That’s what we train for.
Because fitness isn’t the goal, freedom is.
